    As far as I know no one has taken a reading of the temperature 100 -500m beneath the South Pole.
    Perhaps that is because of the risk of suspended animation in ice. Not many people believe that is possible and see no need to kill themselves to prove they are right..

    A neutrino detector (IceCube) is being built at the South Pole (actually at the Pole…within a few hundred meters, anyway, but right there…a lot of people say “south pole” when they mean “Antarctica”, the continent centered on the South Pole).

    Anyway…to build the neutrino detector, hot water is being used to drill holes in the 10,000 foot thick ice at the Pole to depths between 1450 m and 2450 m.I haven’t been able to find anything on if temperature data is being recorded, but take a look at their homepage (link below).

    The Pole’s winter low temperatures on the surface (recorded by the Amundsen-Scott South Pole base personnel) average -81 degrees F.
