The Forever War by Jack Haldeman is a fantastic example of this very premise.

It’s about a man who goes to war hundreds of light years from earth and comes back hundreds of years later to experience the drastic changes society had made during his absence. He’s called back into duty and gets shipped off another hundred light years from earth, and so on and so on. . .

A must read for any sci-fi nerd.
